The Big Jar Isn't Always the Better Deal

Two jars of peanut butter, same brand, same shelf. The 16 oz jar is $3.99. The 40 oz jar is $8.99. Your brain says the small one is the safer buy, it's less money. Do the math and the small jar costs $0.25 an ounce. The big one costs $0.22 an ounce. The "expensive" jar is actually 12% cheaper, ounce for ounce.

That gap is exactly why unit pricing exists, and exactly why almost nobody uses it consistently. It's not that shoppers are bad at math. It's that the math changes shape every time you cross an aisle.

Why the sticker price lies to you

A pack of chicken thighs is priced per pound. A bottle of dish soap is priced per fluid ounce. A 12-pack of soda is priced per can. Cereal comes in ounces until it crosses a pound, then some stores switch the shelf tag to price per pound mid-comparison. To actually compare two products, you need to convert both to the same unit, in your head, standing in the aisle, while your kid asks if you can hurry up.

Store shelf tags are supposed to help with this, but they're inconsistent between stores, easy to miss, and useless the moment you're comparing what you paid last month at one store against what you're looking at today at another. Your memory doesn't hold onto "$0.22 an ounce." It holds onto "that one felt cheaper."

What AisleAMP actually does

When you log an item's price in AisleAMP, there's an optional size field, a number and a unit, oz, lb, g, kg, fl oz, ml, l, gal, or "ea" for count. The moment you've entered a price, a size, and a unit, the app calculates a per-unit price and shows it as a badge right under the field, before you've even saved the item. Type $8.99 and 40 oz, and you see $0.22/oz appear instantly.

Under the hood, AisleAMP normalizes everything into two buckets: weight and volume. Grams and kilograms, ounces and pounds all convert to a common weight base; milliliters, liters, fluid ounces, and gallons convert to a common volume base. It also picks the unit that keeps the number readable, once a weight item crosses 16 ounces, it displays price per pound instead of price per ounce; once a volume item crosses 64 fluid ounces, it switches to price per gallon. You're never staring at "$0.0137/oz" trying to figure out if that's good.

The bigger payoff shows up when you're comparing stores. If you've logged the same item at two or more stores, AisleAMP's price comparison panel shows both a "Best" badge, the store with the lowest total price, and, separately, a "Best unit" badge, the store with the lowest price per ounce or pound, but only when the unit prices are actually comparable (same normalized unit across stores). Those two badges don't always land on the same store. A store selling a smaller, cheaper-looking package can lose the unit-price badge to a store selling a bigger, pricier-looking one, exactly like the peanut butter jars above.

What changes

Before: you compare sticker prices, or you don't compare at all because the mental math isn't worth the trip. You default to whichever size or store feels like the deal, and sometimes that's backwards.

After: the moment you type a price and size, you have a number you can actually compare, $/oz, $/lb, $/fl oz, or $/gal, and when your price history spans multiple stores, the app tells you flatly whether the lowest-priced option is also the best per-unit deal, or whether you're paying a premium per ounce for a smaller box that just looks like the frugal choice.

The takeaway, with or without the app

Before you grab the smaller package because it has the lower number on the tag, divide price by quantity in the same unit for every option you're weighing, price per ounce for weight, price per fluid ounce for liquids, price per item for multipacks. Most stores already print this on the shelf tag in small type below the price; it's worth the two extra seconds to read it. When it isn't printed, do the division yourself: total price divided by total ounces (or pounds, once you're over 16 oz) beats guessing every time. The size that "feels" expensive is frequently the one that's actually saving you money.
